 It Must Be Heaven
The large two story frame hipped roof house, built about 1903 for George Waters, displays a combination of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival Stylistic influences. A strong local tradition that it was designed by Herbert Woodley Simpson. The prolific turn of the century New Bern Architect , Is supported by its detailing and similarities to several other known examplesof his work.
Dominating the facade is a full height, three sided bay capped by a pedimented gable containing unusual paired half lunettes, perhaps to echo the many federal periodexamples of such lunettes in New Bern.
A one story porch supported by tuscan columns across the facade. The focal point of the interior is the three story open staircase rising from a spacious hall heated by a fireplace. The stair has panelled newels topped by finials, molded handrails, and turned balusters, all stained a dark mahogany color. Sliding pocket doors separate the two front parlor rooms . The house contains fine oak classical mantels with various combinations of bevelled mirrors, colonnettes, and applied decoration.Waters who served as the craven county register of deeds in the earlier twentieth century.
